VASP (Virtual Asset Service Provider)

The FATF term for a business conducting virtual asset activities on behalf of others — exchange, transfer, custody, or participation in financial services relating to an issuance.

Why it matters

The term matters because most national regimes define their licensing perimeter using it or a close equivalent. Whether an entity is a VASP determines which obligations attach to it.

What you can check

VASP is a FATF-derived category that national regimes implement in their own terms — registered, licensed, or authorised, depending on where. Whether a given firm is one, and under whom, is a matter of the relevant public register rather than of the firm’s own description.

Not advice. Definitions are for understanding, not instruction. Nothing here is financial, legal, tax or security advice.
